Feeder Fun

This feeder by First Nature
is our favorite (as noted on the Bargains!
page).
With only three pieces per unit, cleaning and filling is fast and easy.
This little feeder (left) suctions to the window.
This large feeder (right) glows in the dark!
(Yes, hummingbirds will feed at night.)
Attracting hummingbirds to
your yard is easily done by providing
a dependable food source. To
accomplish this, prepare sugar solution,
fill a feeder, and place
where the hummers can reach it.
Simple, but keep these points in mind:
Choose a durable feeder
that is (1) easy to fill (2) even easier to clean,
and (3) has very few parts.
Having fun is the goal, not
spending lots of time on maintenance.
Hummingbirds are
attracted to red and yellow,
but yellow feeders will
also attract bees.
Feeders that easily drip are more likely to attract ants.
The best feeders aren't necessarily the most expensive ones.
Our favorite feeders cost less than five dollars.
Place your feeders where you'll enjoy the view.
Consider hanging one outside a window to watch
the “action” from your desk or sofa.
Change the solution every 4-5 days (more frequently in hot weather)
to avoid the growth of bacteria and fungus harmful to hummingbirds.
This feeder was pretty, but I no longer use
it.
The hummers noticed, but had difficulty
finding the nectar ports. Also, the bottom portion
of molded plastic had some sharp edges inside.
Since hummers lap the sugar solution with their tongues,
we had to trim and smooth the inside edges to prevent injuries.
It developed mold quickly too, and was very difficult to clean!
THUMBS DOWN!
